Dear Friends,
we like to introduce to you the young Reform Jewish Community of Hamburg, a non-profit organization. This community was founded by 12 Jews in Hamburg in August 2004, and comprises now (Januar 2008)
more than 150 members.
Hamburg has a long tradition of Reform Judaism. The New Israelite Temple Society was founded in 1817 following prior unsuccessful attempts made in the Netherlands, Westphalia and Berlin and existedt antill 1937. Many Reform communities, including New York and Baltimore, adopted the Hamburg Temple's new prayer book. Today Reform Judaism, with its origins in the Hamburg Temple, has alone in the USA circa 2 million members.
Our community is a member of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. There are regular Friday evening, Shabbat and holiday services and classes for religious Jewish knowledge, which are held by a rabbinic student of the Abraham-Geiger-College.
Other regular activities are afternoon get-togethers, concerts, various outings, a children's group with music lessons, a youth group for school children, a dance group and a choir. All these are manifold
opportunities to get together with other members of all ages of the community.
A very important task of our community is the integration of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. We offer German language classes and various help contacting different local councils.
On our german website you will find all necessary information about our community life, a current list of services and events and how to contact us. In addition we distribute to everybody registered a monthly flyer by email.
